What have Fulham done?

Martin Jol is not Jolly

Martin Jol is not Jolly

Having ‘announced’ that they have got their man, Fulham FC, without a manager since July this year after Roy Hodgson took over at Anfield, have shot themselves in the foot, with Jol, Ajax/former-Tottenham manager, releasing a statement that he will not leave his club. He stated that he has a lot of unfinished business, with Fulham hoping to sign him with all the transfers that are shrouding Ajax.

Having said that, Fulham should not have stated (through their owner) that the deal is done. It looks like they have to start afresh now.

An honest letter from a Chelsea fan [Part 1]

Dear world,

How’s it going? Yes. It’s me. A Chelsea fan. Still bitter about us winning the league eh? No problem. I’m happy that happened. Past few years have been a bit unpleasant, so under an Italian who can barely speak English, winning 2 of the biggest English football trophies must be enough for you to loathe about. As far as the world is concerned, “we dont give a shit”. WE WON. YES. WE, AS IN AN INDIAN LIVING THOUSANDS OF KILOMETERS AWAY WHO SUPPORTS THE SAME TEAM EVERY DAY FOR OVER 8 YEARS YET THE TEAM DOESNT HAVE ANY CLUE ABOUT HIM. YES, I GET TO SAY ‘WE’!

KTBFFH!

KTBFFH!

It’s not an easy feat to support just one team for almost a decade, even back when I came a fan, after seeing Lampard’s postage stamp free kick vs Everton in ’02, (before Abramovich took over, so yes, you can shove those ‘plastick’ remarks up your ManYoo’fied Arse) that too, in a country where people change loyalties more frequently than their underwear, and support Spanish teams by night.

Now that the question of my loyalty has been dealt with, lets get down to a few things, shall we?

1)Yes, we have money, quit bringing it up and stop being jealous.

Most fans I’ve seen circle around the fact that all Chelsea do/did since Roman came on boat was lure players. To such guys, all I would say is grow up now, will you? Yes, our club has money now (wait, this isnt 2003), money we can spend on the stadium, the pitch, the staff, the fans, the players and also, on the team. The club is financially stable (unlike ManU and Liverpool) and thus, can attract players into the team.

Yes, a man with a boat

A man with a boat

So doesnt it speak highly of the club to *bring* players in? There have been mistakes (yes, Shevchenko didnt do well at all) but I dont think I need to remind anyone that ManU also spent 30m on a misfiring Spud, while, Liverpool spent 20m on an injured Aquilani. Ultimately, after all the sales/purchases, Chelsea are *still* financially strong, along with a self sustained Arsenal, while ManU are Liverpool are debt-ridden.

Doesnt a takeover ensure the former and nullify the later? By nullifying doesnt it ensure the club is the the position to bargain for players? That is a good thing right? When finances are in order (Portsmouth anyone?) Yet, time and again, I see arguments of “players are in it for the money”. After arguing countless times and still being subjected to the same topic, I conclude. Yes, we have money, quit bringing it up stop being jealous.

2)I hate Terry as much as you do

Yes, a Blue’s fan that hates Terry. OMG THE HORROR! I’M AN OUTRAGE! Well, get over yourself. He was a class act, one of the best defenders the world had seen, and was a role model (look at the use of past tense) He’s now a liability, a money laundering hoe, and is a glory hunter, after the night of Moscow ’08. IMO, if we sell him, we’ll make a hefty profit, get rid of a no-show, make the true Mr. Chelsea aka Frank Lampard captain, and invest in new talent. Yet, I’m not the one making that call.

The saddest thing you'll ever see

The saddest thing you'll ever see

However, after the demand for a huge salary hike inorder to stay in the team and not move to the Wastekands, and the infamous spat/affair of the great ‘Mr Chelsea’ with a former colleague’s wife, my little shred of respect for the man who actually cried when he slipped at Moscow, was lost. He sunk to a new low, making it highly difficult for me to fathom why anyone labeled him as ‘Mr Chelsea’ in the first place (since that postage stamp free-kick, Lampard has been the key ‘cog’ in Chelsea, Terry could always be replaced by any defender in the sub’s bench, especially after Moscow)

Yes, I would be happy to see Terry leave/be sold. As his fall from grace has been way to much to climb back up again. If he does get better, the team will benefit immensely, but knowing that it’s a very very small possibility, I wouldn’t think twice if I were Ancelotti to let him go.

. . to be continued (yes, there more to come :D )

The Travesty Continues…..

A global poll of football experts was conducted by the BBC Sport website to produce a predicted top four before the start of the 2010 World Cup. While many had their doubts over the lack of consistency of the England team, many were confident that the “golden generation of England” would produce the same magic as the Class of ’66 to bring the Cup back home. Ex-England midfielder Geoff Thomas’ claimed:

England will win the World Cup because for once I think we have got a team that backs up being favourites, as they always are in our eyes… I can’t see a side out there who can beat us on our day.

Unfortunately that ‘day’ never came for England. Apart from the brilliant 20 minutes they played for in the very first match, England were consistently dismal. And of course their luck didnt help either. Bad goalkeeping, horrible defending, refereeing errors all contributed to the downfall of the team that was expected to reach the semis atleast, if not win the tournament. So what actually went wrong?

Bad Management:

  • Decision to pick Emile Heskey. He has been absolutely shambolic..to the extent that he’d be killed on the spot if he encounters any Aston Villa fan.
  • Tactical screw-ups. I think Capello had such a special bond with Heskey that he allowed Heskey to start each of the first 2 games. The result was but obvious. He was urged to play a 4-5-1 by many, considering the maturing of Wayne Rooney as a lone striker. Gerrard, the skipper behind Rooney could have had devastating consequences for the opposition. But Capello chose to stick with 2 strikers, which didn’t work.
  • Refusal to play Joe Cole. I simply cannot understand why a class act as Cole was kept on the bench, when the other wingers were struggling.

Robert Green:

No personal issues with him, but he led the downfall of England. They were comfortable, confident and calm. Until this happened:

Rob Green’s Blink and Miss Moment

my computer? has a virus called robert green. now it cant save anything..

Well the youtube comment says it all…..

Also responsible for the premature oust was the inept defending of England. Well the less said about it the better, you must’ve been pissed already :P

Injuries and Referees:

A stupid injury to the skipper just before the tournament starts is enough to demoralise any team. Though Ferdinand wasn’t their most reliable player, the team did face nervousness over the loss of a definite first choice defender. I believe Ferdinand will be thanking his stars for not being one among that horrific defensive back 4 in the tournament.

Well I needn’t tell anything about the horrific refereeing on display. The video below says it all.

Definitely shouldve gone to specsavers…

Wayne Rooney’s form didn’t help either, but this edition of the World Cup has seen to it that the futures of the players of the Nike Ad “Write the Future” aren’t the same again.

Media:

The chief reason for England’s ouster imo.The “Chaney ka Jhaad” phrase applies perfectly here. To burden the life of the players by their enormous expectations was a big mistake which came back to haunt the whole nation in a very big way. The hype they created for the past 3 months could only rewarded with a lol 1-0 nervous victory over Slovenia. Doesn’t seem worth it, does it?

Maybe they should have allowed the Victoria Beckhams and the Alex Currans to come to South Africa. Atleast the fans would’ve be in for some delicious visual treat. The wait for the World Cup continues for the English…

Though thefinal3rd.com was started to be an Indian football blog that is constantly updated, we have hit a few obstacles. College admissions, school reopenings, jobs, extra-credit projects have kept us all busy and as a result, away from this site.

We do assure you (or atleast I assure you) that the site will go on, but for now, its a tough call. Do stick around though, as we hope to clear our shit up and continue to post about football. Hence, pardon our intolerance :)

Day One. World Cup 2010. Report Card

Jun 12th

Posted by K Kumar in World Cup 2010

Yes, it’s started. The biggest tourno in the world has begun. After a very strange opening ceremony, and a lot of vuvuzelas, the World Cup is finally underway. Here’s the report card of Day One:

1) RSA vs MEX

Drowned by the drone of vuvuzelas, this World Cup kicked off with hosts South Africa, with a deafening home support, vs a vile Mexican team. Overall, the match was not bad. First half hour was horrible, considering both teams were nervous, and that the vuvuzelas became so annoying that it made me switch channels atleast.

Add to it a very strange “experts” panel put up by ESPN with NO John Dykes or Harsha Bhogle. Instead, we got treated to a little bit of Shebby Singh, and a new hostess who, lets face it, *was* better than Mandira Bedi, but wasnt upto the mark.  Even so, I did tune into the second half, having gotten used to the drone, and I must say, it was enjoyable. The play opened up. Unlike the first half, which only saw me seeing Vela score from an offside position, the game livened up, with end-to-end stuff.

It wasnt too long before Tshabalala beat the offside trap, and blasted past the Mexican keeper. 1-0 to the Bafana Bafanas’. Cue the bee’s drone.

In time though, Mexico began creating chances, and equalized through the calm head of Marquez, 1-1 at 80mins.

What could have been the decider, Mphela does a “Tshabalala”, beats the defence, beats the keeper, only to be denied by the post at 89mins.

The game ended at 1-1. A good start to the World Cup, and I got used to the vuvuzelas too :D

2) France vs Uraguay

Only good thing out of this match was the fact that I can confirm John Dykes will co-present the World Cup. Because the match was a borefest. You know the match is not that great when *Diaby* of all people is someone I can find worthy of praise. Both teams cancelled each other out, with the biggest chance going to Govou, in the opening 10mins, when he showed how to poop. For the record books, the first red card of the tournament was awarded to Nicolas Lodiero.

0-0 it ended. The Irish curse? We’ll wait an watch.

Today’s Matches: Greece vs Korea (5.00pm) Argentina vs Nigeria (7.30pm) and USA vs England (11.50pm) on ESPN. Expect a full review tomorrow :D

Just the kind of place for me

There’s a big hole in the earth, a dark place infested with all the vermin of the world. And its morals aren’t worth what a pig could spit. It goes by the name of Madrid. Home of the rich, the flamboyant, the egotistic, and the utter shite. A place with high expectations. And money. Just the kind of place for me.

My plan is simple. Win. The fags at Barcelona hate me, and I like nothing more than that. Apart from winning of course. Winning the La liga, Copa del Rey and the Champions League. Ah, I’m getting an orgasm just thinking about it. Wait, lemme have a wank. Brb.

Okay, now that I’m done, let me get back to where I was. The Catalans cunts play attractive football – everything they kick turns out to be a goal (not applicable to Ibrahimovic), perfect pass, or if it’s Daniel Alves, the opponents’ feet. Their manager is the nicest person on earth – always on the receiving end of praise from the media. Unless you’re a Barca fan, you have every reason to be jealous. Why can’t your club be successful and be nice? I can change all that.

Peekaboo!

Remember him? Crumbling biscuits, yes. Ridiculous dive. No one is allowed to bring his bottom to the grass like that, unless he is a member of my team. So yes, Cristiano Ronaldo is no longer a diver – it is always a clear foul. I can bring out the Bad in BarcaTM – as I showed on my (yes, my) march to victory in the Champions League. Mou make them dive..cheat..argue with ref…..lose. El Clasico? My special ass. Just another game for me.

How will I win? Will I deliver success by playing entertaining football? Can I manage all the big egos at Madrid? Piece of cake. I will play my usual brand of football. Florentino Perez can ride Pepe’s angry little **** if he wants me to play attractive football. I will seduce the Spanish press with my speech – they will forget that we play boring, see? I will do things
mou way. I will buy my Chelsea and Inter players for a total summer spending of £3454523834934 million. All of Pellegrini’s signings will help the reserves lift the title. (Successful on all fronts, you see). Except for Cristiano Ronaldo. He is like a sexier, more stupid, more-proficient-in-football alter-ego of myself. He reminds me of my special self, and I love that. He can also keep the cameras trained on him while Pepe beats the crap out of the opposition.

Any last thoughts, you ask? Yes.
Yo soy el especial de una. I am The Special One.

Am I The Special One? You bet!

Tubby leaving. Fan sad. Make fan cry.

Its official. Rafael Benitez aka Tubby is leaving for greener pastures (literally) with the club making him take the compensation and leave. Just the other day, an old useless man was made to sign VRS by a company. Similarities?

Tubby make Stevie happy!

Tubby make Stevie happy!

Agreed. He *can* be considered as one of the great, like Daglish. He brought European glory. He gave us Fernando Alonso Torres, Gerrard, Carragher, Kuyt. He led Liverpool to one of the most memorable campaigns *two* seasons ago.

Tubby make mistake(s)

Tubby make mistake(s)

Thats it. Can you remember even ONE of the 70+ odd signings who’s made a great impact AND is still at the club? (mind you, 2/4 players I named were bought) Veronin, Ngog ( I call him “inCognito”) ROBBIE KEANE, Pennant, Morrientes, Aqualani, ROBBIE KEANE, Glen Johnson, Ryan Babel, ROBBIE KEANE. Thats just the tip of the iceberg. Add to it a hopelessly shambolic “rotation policy” which quite frankly, looked to be more confusing than trying to figure out Ravindra Jadeja’s exact role in the Indian cricket team. And yet, Tubby make fan cry . . . why?

  1. Liverpool lost a manager who gave them a few trophies before ManUre fans could laugh at them (oh . .wait)
  2. Liverpool lost a manager for whom the term “headless chicken” would mean insulting the dead chicken
  3. Liverpool lost a manager who seemed to be as confused as Eboue in relation to squad management.
  4. The world lost a manager who could looked *willing* to reduce the club to shit (in Rafa we trust?)
  5. Liverpool lost a manager who showed us the true colours of Robbie Keane and Sammy Lee.
Tubby make fan sad

Tubby make fan sad

Agreed, its piss easy to point fingers. Its piss easy to rant (as I have now) Its piss easy to make fun of Liverpool (as I have done now). Rafa is *not* too bad. Going by statistics alone, he’s got a 57% success rate, which seems good. He respected the fans, gave us glory days of beating the pulp of ManUre when needed, and most notably, somehow managed to string in a side on a shoestring budget. But, in my opinion, the cons far outweigh the pros, especially the last season. Injuries cant be blamed, every squad had them, Chelsea, ManUre and Arsenal included. Its the bizzare nature of signings and a strange team policy that did him in. (Above example of 70+ signings vs only TWO still thriving.)

Thus, I rest my case. If he’s going to Inter, I guess he’s put Eto’o, Zannetti and Sniejder up for sale. LONG LIVE RAFA! To top it all off, I leave you with the legacy of Rafael Benitez.

England Squad for the World Cup – Promising or Farcical?

Jun 2nd

So after much speculation and media hype, the English squad for the World Cup 2010 was announced. The English folks, as it seems to me, are a joke. I mean c’mon, agreed, its the biggest football spectacle occurring after every 4 years. But pushing the hype to such an extent, that journalists and media folks literally tweet and broadcast the situation every 5 minutes about who’s in and who’s out is worthy of a big laugh. Media were busy contacting the players’ agents to confirm whether their client is on the plane to South Africa. I myself being a England fan was eagerly awaiting the squad announcement, but never in my wildest dreams would I become so desperate to know simply the squad thats being announced.

Heck, even the students in India aren’t this nervous when their results are about to be announced. Obviously not all were amused by this drama. Fans retorting on the BBC website was a hilarious experience.

What a pathetic way to find this all out, with it dripping through from various journos. Just make the official announcement FA!”

I wonder if any Englishmen died due to a stroke or a heart attack!

Finally the official squad announcement was made at 16:00 BST, what a relief that mustn’t been for the locals. It bought its share of surprises,of course. What’s English football without some ‘masala’ anyways? The exclusion of Theo Walcott came as a shock to many. After all, the boy wonder who made headlines all over with a game of his life against Croatia couldn’t have been expected to be left out. But it did happen, and maybe it did break some English hearts. But was it the correct decision by the Italian tactician Capello? I think yes, it was. According to me, the best word to describe Walcott at this moment would be ‘inconsistent’. He has the promise to be a great footballer, but for some godly reason,he never has proved his worth. He has had many chances to shine at Arsenal. But 9 out of 10 times, his judgment has been incorrect.

Good defenders wouldn’t hesitate one bit to face him. Since the day Walcott showed the promise, he hasnt improved one bit. Injuries to him over the year haven’t helped him either. So the question that arises here is,”Is the choice of Shaun Wright-Phillips over Theo Walcott justified?”

I’d say both are worthless at this moment, and nobody among them would make a difference. A. Johnson, on the other hand, after impressing many with his recent performances for Manchester City will be very unlucky.

Amongst the other absentees in the plane to South Africa will be Leighton Baines. Nothing much to argue there really, he dug his own grave with his performance against Mexico. Still the choice of Warnock over him is debatable, given Warnock didn’t face either Mexico or Japan for Capello to give his final assessment.

The Aston Villa defender performed that most unique of feats – playing himself into a World Cup squad by simply sitting on the sidelines.

Tom Huddlestone has had a consistent season for Tottenham, but is direly unlucky to have been left out in favour of Michael Carrick. The choice of Carrick is a joke. He has been steadily on the decline for Manchester United last season ,and some arguments that he usually came to his best form during November-December were quashed aside. I don’t think Carrick has any role in the England team, except of course providing some defensive cover in the midfield. Scott Parker for me would have been the ideal choice instead of Carrick. He ought to have been rewarded for his consistent performance for the Hammers this season. The return of Gareth Barry seems to be a huge plus for the English squad, but whether he really performs as the hype is, remains to be seen.

And of course, how can you forget Michael Dawson? He’s been excellent this season, but still no chance for him to get his first England cap in South Africa. Reason?

The selection of Matthew Upson. I jumped out of my seat when I read this. What was Capello thinking?!!

Darren Bent is another notable exclusion. He’s been denied a ticket to South Africa thanks to a hopeless, on-the-decline player named Emile Heskey. And why was Heskey chosen over Bent? Apparently because his partnership with Rooney or for that matter any other striker is good, that he links well with the team. Thats a “lolworthy” reason to select a player who’s simply a liability to a team and to leave out and deny a chance to a player who’s scored 26 goals for his club this season. Simply put, utterly shambolic.

Amongst the inclusions in the squad, Jamie Carragher would be delighted on being chosen. I only hope he does better things on the field other than needless lunges, hopeless bookings and the much unwanted own-goals. Ledley King has been chosen for his great and consistent performances in the last few weeks for Tottenham, but Capello seems to have overlooked his disastrous injury record and the struggles against Mexico.

Joe Cole is one player I’m optimistic about, I believe he should add another dimension to the England attack and prove his worth as a world class player. Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon and James Milner were to be chosen by default, so no complaints there. Though Lennon needs to keep his injury problems in check. I really hope the Gerrard and Lampard partnership flourishes this time,as England would need the two to be in their top form if they are to succeed.

All hopes of England attack, however, must lie on,of course,Wayne Rooney. He’s just has a season of his life and will be rearing to go out there and give problems to the opposition keeper and defenders. Peter Crouch is another hotshot who does the opposite – Plays well for the nation but is disastrous for his club. Ashley Cole and Glen Johnson should be playing their part of being the attacking fullbacks as well.

The real problem in the England team for me, is their defence. Rio Ferdinand and John Terry are inconsistent, at best. Gone are the days when they used to be metaphorically described as the wall of their defence, and though thats not all over yet, its as frequently visible as a full moon. Ashley Cole is decent enough as a defender, but G. Johnson can be a big loophole at times. I’m sure Capello chose Johnson only as an attacking fullback and definitely not as a defender alone.

The inclusion of the goalkeeping trio of Green, James and Hart was inevitable. Yet whether they are consistent enough to perform at an international scale, remains to be seen.

On summarizing this squad, I’d say it just has the combination of experience and attacking and defensive prowess. On paper, they should be able to beat anybody. But their unconvincing display against Mexico and utterly inconsistent how against Japan should tell anybody the difference between a side written on a paper and a side performing on a field.

If I’m being realistic though, this England squad for me is good enough, but just not good enough to go all the way.

Although, anything can happen in football.

real madrid“I am Jose Mourinho and I don’t change. I arrive with all my qualities and my defects.”

As if to re-emphasise his position as one of the best ‘orators’ in the modern game, this is how Jose Mourinho spoke at his unveiling as the new Real Madrid manager. After winning the treble with Inter Milan of Italy, the self- styled Special One arrived at the Santiago Bernabeu as a Champions League winner yet again. The last time he won club football’s biggest prize, he landed on the shores of England to take over the noveau-rich Chelsea FC.

“Please don’t call me arrogant but I’m European champion and I think I’m a special one”

With this quote, Jose became the most sought-after interviewee for the British press who saw him as a breath of fresh air. His status was further enhanced by the success of Chelsea FC on the pitch. He left Chelsea by mutual consent having won 2 Premier League titles, 1 Carling Cup, 1 FA Cup and 1 Community Shield.

After a brief hiatus, the Special One sought employment in Italy and took over the reins at Inter Milan. In Italy, as in England, he had several brushes with authority, the league and fellow managers. His ‘I don’t give a f*ck’ stylings didn’t go too well with the Italians, who clearly “didn’t like him” (his words, not mine).

Jose Mourinho at Real Madrid

‘The Translator’, as Barcelona fans not so fondly call him, will now occupy the seat which has accommodated the backsides of 9 coaches in 6 years (of course, not all at the same time). Those posteriors belonged to some of the most respected coaches in the world – Fabio Capello, Bernd Schuster, Manuel Pellegrini, Juande Ramos… Okay, so Juande Ramos was a joke, but you get the drift, right? The reasons for their sackings ranged from ‘boring football’ to ‘boring personality’ to ‘wrong colour of underwear’.

So for how long will Mourinho survive in the Madrid madhouse? If his footballing philosophy stays unchanged, he could have the pro-Madrid newspapers gunning for his head right from round 1 of La Liga. ‘We want to be entertained AND we want to win’, they’ll say. That certainly did Capello in, so they might as well give it a second try. But does Jose care? Not one bit. He has heard chants of ‘Boring, boring Chelsea’ from opposition fans and neutrals alike all along, so ‘Boring, boring Madrid’ (in Spanish, of course) wouldn’t make him sweat.

Jose Mourinho

But if the on-pitch stuff could be boring, Mourinho would more than make up for it with his entertainment value off-the-pitch. We could get to read/hear some more classics from the Portuguese and if his past form is anything to go by, it’s gonna be one heck of a season in La Liga and it won’t be just because of the football. :D

A different World Cup?

Jun 1st

Its a myriad of topics I’d like to talk about, but I’ll make it as concise as possible. All of them are centred around the World Cup in South Africa, beginning in 10 days. Lets get to it:

Firstly, the buildup to this world cup has been anything but great. Compared to EURO 2008, WC 2006 or even WC 2002, there’s been lots of speculation, doubt, name calling and potential streaking involved in the run up to this one. Eyebrows raied over Maradona’s techniques and squad selection, the German squad being reduced to 23 men (if I remember correctly) when the final squad hasnt even been announced. Marcello Lippi’s “I dont give no fuck” attitude towards the media, and to top it all off, reports (at the time of writing) of Fabio Capello labelled as a douche for leaving out Walcott and favouring SWP (yeah, its strange, coz Dunga was also called a douche, and “trended” on twitter as well).

Why is all this happening? To set things straight, its one of the most “open” world cup in a long time. It’s anybody’s guess who’s going to win it. No one is a clear cut favorite this year. Brazil, Italy, Argentina, Germany, Portugal, England, Spain, Holland (equivalent to the South African cricket team when it comes to big tournaments, but still) along with EVERY group having teams with potential to cause an upset (like Senegal and Turkey in 2002, or Russia in EURO 2008) has made this a very interesting event.

Fuck you!

Fuck you!

Add to it Brazil, Italy and Argentina are not *exactly* the same team that showed up in previous finals and England,

the perennial under-achievers of football, are having a manager with more balls (or atleast has convinced the media) than ANY of the previous managers combined, and you have a slurry of verbs, sound bytes, and opinions coming out of this year’s build-up. The end result, even pundits dont know what to expect.

Now, to a more surreal topic. The vuvuzela.

What’s that you ask? Its the bloody annoying noise that sounds like a cross between a bee’s hive, an elephant’s moan, and a swamp’s mosquitoes. Blow into it like there’s no tomorrow and arm the 50,000 odd fans one instrument each. The result is a din thats more annoying than Himesh Chammiya fans clamouring his greatness.

STOP BLOWING!

STOP BLOWING!

Its South African culture, and that I absolutely have no objection with. South Africa won the right to this year’s biggest event. But if you’ve seen the Confederation’s Cup last year, the din was too annoying to stand. If its a few thousand fans playing it (as it was in rare cases) it sounded great. But with the whole stadium making a hive’s noise, it made even Andy Gray’s coverage more bearable.

All in all, we are in for a kickass tournament, a different tournament and I hope sense prevails among South African fans during the tourno :D
